Privacy

Short version: there are no accounts, no cookies, and nothing about you leaves your browser.

What is stored, and where

One entry in your browser's local storage, named bytestep:v1. It holds which lesson you have reached, which step you were on, your answers to the prediction questions, and two preferences, playback speed and depth. It holds no name, no email, no identifier, and nothing that could be used to recognise you on another site.

It never leaves your device. There is no server to send it to: this site is a folder of files, and the page you are reading was built before you asked for it.

Links you share

When you copy a link to a lesson, the part after the # carries the settings you were looking at. Browsers never send that part to a server, so sharing a link does not tell us that you did.

Cookies

None. Not for analytics, not for preferences, not for anything, which is why there is no banner asking you to accept any.

Analytics

If and when we measure anything, it will be counts of anonymous events (how many people reached the end of a lesson, how many shared one) with no cookie, no cross-site identifier and nothing that could single you out. There is no session recording and no heatmapping, and any measurement we add will keep to that standard.

Children

The site collects no personal data from anyone, of any age, so there is nothing held about a child either.

Your rights

Rights to access, correct or erase personal data all concern data a service holds about you. We hold none, so there is nothing to request and nothing for us to delete. The only copy of anything is the one in your own browser, and it is yours to remove at any moment.

Removing it

Clearing site data for this domain in your browser settings removes everything. You will lose your place in a lesson and nothing else.

Changes

If this ever changes, for example if accounts are added so progress can follow you between devices, it will be stated here with a new date, and the version without an account will keep working exactly as it does today.
